Episode Title: Rewriting Your Career Narrative—How to Build a Career Escape Plan Before Burnout Hits
Host: Olajumoke Fatoki

You won’t believe the moment I realized my 9 to 5 wasn’t broken.
It just was never built for someone like me.

If you’ve ever felt stuck in the wrong job, this is your sign—it’s time to rewrite the narrative.

Hey friends, welcome to another exciting episode of the Thrive Careers Podcast!
I’m Olajumoke Fatoki—a certified HR professional, career coach, and founder of Thrive Careers Consulting, where I help high achievers like you land dream roles and build careers that feel as good as they look on paper.

Whether you’re tuning in from Spotify or watching on YouTube, today’s episode is for that part of you that whispers every Monday morning:
“There’s got to be more than this.”

The Truth About the 9 to 5

Let’s get real—the 9 to 5 isn’t dead. It’s not going anywhere.
 But it is evolving—rapidly.

If you’ve been feeling stuck, uninspired, or craving more freedom… this episode might just be your wake-up call.

So grab a notebook or just lean in, because today we’re not just talking about leaving your job.
We’re actually building your career escape plan—together.

My Story: From Misalignment to Clarity

A few years ago, I had what most people would call a dream job:
A great team, decent pay, and a promising career ladder.
But every Monday felt like a loop. I kept asking myself:
 “Is this it?”
“There’s got to be more than this.”

That question didn’t come from burnout or stress. It came from misalignment.

So I pulled back and started designing something different—
A path that didn’t require burning it all down to start over.
And that’s what I’m here to share with you today.

Why So Many Are Questioning the 9 to 5 in 2025

The traditional job gave us structure and stability.
But here’s what I see now:

  • Burnout is the new baseline.
  • Creativity is boxed in.
  • Layoffs happen without warning.
  • Remote work often means Zoom fatigue… in your living room.

Sound familiar?

Let me ask you:
What is your personal tipping point?
Because if you’re already asking, “Is this it?”—you’re closer to pivoting than you think.

You Don’t Need to Hate Your Job to Desire Change

Let me say something no one tells you:
You don’t need to hate your job to want something more.

Here are four signs you might be ready for a shift:

  1. You dread most days that end in “Y.”
  2. You daydream about building something of your own.
  3. You feel overworked and underutilized.
  4. You whisper, “I just want more freedom”—even if you’d never admit it out loud.

This isn’t about being ungrateful.
 It’s about being unfulfilled.

Let’s Build Your Career Escape Plan

Step 1: Clarity
Everything begins with clarity. Ask yourself:
What do I really want?
Is it more freedom? Time with your kids? Impact? Travel?

You need to define it—on your own terms.
Forget TikTok trends. To thyself, be true.

Step 2: Skills
You need relevant, marketable skills. Period.
Your 9 to 5 taught you how to do a job.
But your next chapter might require you to market yourself, pitch ideas, or teach others.

Try tools like Notion, Canva, ChatGPT, or even podcasting.
You’ll be amazed at what you can learn—and earn—with the right skillset.

Ask yourself:
What’s one skill I can learn in the next 30 days that will move me closer to freedom?

Step 3: Bridge Income
You don’t have to quit cold turkey.
You still have bills to pay, and that’s valid.

That’s why I recommend the bridge approach:
Start small with freelance work, teaching, consulting—or even create a tiny digital product.

Think:
What do people naturally come to you for?
That’s a clue to your first offer.

Step 4: Mindset Shift
You must shift from thinking like “just an employee” to seeing yourself as a brand, a builder, a leader.

And here’s the best part:
You don’t need anyone’s permission to want more.
But you do need a plan—and I’m here to guide you through it.

Don’t Wait for a Crisis

Most people wait until they’re laid off, sick, or completely burned out before they take action.

But that’s like waiting for the house to catch fire before checking the smoke alarm.

Start now.
 Build quietly.
 Test.
 Plant seeds.

So when the time comes—you choose your exit.
 You don’t react to it.

Final Thoughts

The 9 to 5 is not dead.
 But it is evolving.

You’re not crazy for wanting more.
You’re not late—you’re right on time.

And yes, you can absolutely build your career escape plan—step by step.
